Hey! Now aren’t these little owls so cute? I made them today with the eight year old I babysit on occasion. Her school had a half a day today, so I was with her basically the whole day until her mother came to pick her up after work. We always do little arts and crafts projects when we’re together, and to be perfectly honest, today I just didn’t know what sort of project to do with her! I was so at a loss that I went on Pinterest just to see if there was anything that looked cool to do. When I came up with nothing, I asked her what she wanted to make, in hopes that today she had some idea of what she wanted to craft. She didn’t, or course, but she did say if we could do something with owls, because they were her favorite.
So, back to Pinterest I went. We looked at many owl projects, all involving cardboard toilet paper rolls, which I didn’t have lying around. Then we came across a very cute pin of some owls made with little boxes, but alas, the blog linked to the DIY tutorial on a site that didn’t exist anymore. This totally discouraged me, because it seemed perfect. But then my little eight year old asked if we could just make our own boxes, coming up to me with an interesting little curved pillow box she got with one of her Valentine’s. That gave me an idea to just use the pictures as a visual reference and wing it.
So we made our own pillow boxes from some colored cardstock and visually followed the pictures to make our owls. Everything else is made of patterned paper I had and we hand cut every bit except the black pupils because I had a one inch circle punch that did that for us. We left the bottom of our boxes open because my eight year old wanted to put stuff in the boxes, but she didn’t know what. This was totally a hands on project that kept us entertained for some time, but I think these little guys came out so great!
I snapped a few photos once we finished them, knowing I was going to let her take each one of them home with her the moment her mother came to pick her up and I’d probably never see them ever again. They were just too cute!
