I want to try something. I’ve been sending mail to various pen pals for a few months now and have noticed that I’m not as creative with my letters as I know I can be. I treat each little letter as it’s own swap, which is fine, but there’s just so much stationery and scrapbook things that I can send a person before it becomes unoriginal and boring. So I’m going to try something different and I invite you all to try it with me.
I’m going to be more creative with my letters. I’m going to make things rather than just curate them. I think that is what’s really missing from the letters I send. I’m a creative person and so I will try to show that through my letters. So here’s what I’m thinking.
Every time I have a new letter to respond to I will post my process of responding. It will be sort of like an art journal prompt, but for creating a really cool, fun letter. Whether it’s trying something new with envelopes or writing my letter in an unorthodox way, I will post the prompt and how I executed said prompt, so that all can follow along and try it for themselves. I’ve always wanted to create a unique art journaling class, and maybe I’ll get around to it someday, but I think this will be a test of that.
On my Tumblr account where I post the mail I send and receive, I get a lot of messages from people wanting to be pen pals with me or how to find pen pals and how to start. I think that’s what drove me to take my personal challenge public. I want this blog to also be a space where people just starting out with pen pals can come to for information on how to start. So bare with me while I start off with “what is…” and “how to…” posts. I want this space to be as cohesive as possible and just to be a great reference on the snail mailing world. For me and for others too.
So here it goes.
