I made a post way back about the symbol of the rose in relation to love. I used a photo of a painting I found on tumblr, which I then traced to the artist’s Instagram and credited to that. I didn’t realize however the name of the Instagram account. Who knew that I had stumbled across Charmaine Olivia’s Instagram account then! I wouldn’t have know because I simply linked the location of the image.
But recently, I stumbled across her website and was simply in awe with her work. I didn’t know she was the same artist as that rose painting, until I took a deeper look at her work and kept telling myself, “wow, kind of looks like that one painting I found…” and low and behold, I found the same painting in her portfolio, along with others in the series. Safe to say, I’m officially hooked on this chick’s work. It’s fabulous!
I really like her paintings a lot, more so than her illustration work (though her silhouettes are beautiful!). The way she uses color is so stunning. I just love her use of color! They are all so vibrant and really jut out at you. The paintings above are from her Muses series, which showcases her newest works. They are all paintings of women with their own stories and emotions (she even names each of them), and if you look hard enough, you just might recognize the real life women Charmaine based the paintings on. You can tell that Charmaine is very influenced by pop culture and fashion models. They’re everywhere in her work.
She makes me want to try my hand at painting again. I believe she uses oil paints, which I never tried, but I suppose I could start small and use what I know: acrylics. I do wonder however, if using oils is how she was able to get the colors to swirl and blend the way they do.
